A Newcastle gang convicted of grooming and raping a 13-year-old girl have been sentenced to jail terms, according to Newcastle Crown Court.
The court heard that the four attackers, aged between 15 and 21 at the time of the crimes committed between August 2018 and April 2019, subjected the victim to horrific abuse, using threats to kill and kidnap her.
The victim described the ordeal as a "living nightmare," stating that the gang "tortured" her and made her childhood unbearable.
Brothers Omar and Mohamed Badreddin, along with Huzaefa Aleboud, were found guilty of multiple rapes, while Hamoud Al Soaimi was convicted of sexual assault.
During the trial, it was revealed that the victim was repeatedly abused in various locations, including a castle keep and behind a burger restaurant in Newcastle city center. The gang used alcohol and cigarettes to groom her before subjecting her to sexual violence.
Mohamed Badreddin was described as "aggressive and rough" towards the victim, threatening her with harm if she didn't comply with his demands. The victim was also raped at her own home, with the brothers threatening her with death or abduction.
Aleboud, also a refugee from Syria, pressured the victim into further sexual contact by blaming her for allowing the Badreddin brothers to abuse her.
Al Soaimi, aged 15 at the time of the crimes, was heard saying it was his "turn" with the victim after she had been raped by others. He also assaulted a 12-year-old girl.
In a statement to the court, the victim, now 19, described her ordeal, stating that her childhood had turned into a nightmare. She revealed dropping out of school and turning to drugs and self-harm to cope with the trauma, causing devastation to her family.
In mitigation, defense lawyers cited the defendants' difficult backgrounds and experiences, including growing up in war-torn Syria and Kuwait.
The sentencing judge acknowledged the severity of the crimes and the impact on the victim, emphasizing the need for justice and accountability.
