Newcastle Council Revisits Blackett Street Pedestrianisation Plans for City Center

Newcastle city council is revisiting proposals to pedestrianise Blackett Street, a bustling thoroughfare in the city center. Initial plans, shelved in 2022 due to leadership changes and opposition from bus firms, are now back on the agenda.

Blackett Street, home to Grey's Monument and Eldon Square shopping center, has been flagged for its high levels of air pollution, prompting renewed discussions for redesigning the city center.

Council members emphasize the need for comprehensive measures, especially with the impending influx of commuters to the nearby HMRC office in Pilgrim Street.

While pedestrianisation advocates tout benefits for walkers and cyclists, concerns linger about potential congestion and accessibility issues for elderly and disabled shoppers. Stagecoach, a key opponent, highlights past passenger losses during temporary closures for events like the Christmas market.

Despite hurdles, council members remain determined, with transport cabinet member Marion Williams affirming that Blackett Street "has to be part of the discussion" for city center revitalization.
