Firefighters Learn Sign Language to Enhance Emergency Communication

In a proactive move toward inclusive emergency response, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service has initiated sign language training for firefighters. The decision came after a meaningful interaction with students with hearing impairments from two local schools.

During a visit to Broadwood Primary School and Jesmond Park Academy, where students with hearing impairments raised concerns about communication during emergencies, firefighters were inspired to take action. In response to the students' inquiries about assisting individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, the fire service decided to equip its 600 staff members with sign language skills.

Steven Walker, Red Watch manager at Newcastle Central Community Fire Station, emphasized the potential life-saving impact of the training program, describing it as "invaluable." He highlighted the collaborative effort between the fire service and the local community, particularly the youth.

The training initiative involves an interactive package comprising an informational guide and a video produced by students. The video features 20 key phrases essential for communication during emergencies, including inquiries such as "where is the fire?" and "are you hurt?"

Kirsten Binns, a teacher at Broadwood Primary School specializing in students with hearing impairments, commended the firefighters' willingness to learn basic sign language. She noted that the students benefited from understanding the firefighters' roles and were delighted to share their knowledge.

The implementation of sign language training underscores the commitment of Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service to fostering inclusivity and effective communication in emergency situations.
