Newcastle's Metro system, a lifeline for commuters and travelers, is set to undergo a significant upgrade to its tunnels. With a hefty investment of £3.4 million, the aim is to replace key tracks within the bustling heart of the city center. This ambitious project is not only about maintaining the functionality of the Metro system but also ensuring its resilience for years to come.
At the heart of this endeavor lies the Prudhoe Street crossover, a critical junction facilitating around 400 train movements daily. This junction serves as the backbone for Metro services traversing through the vibrant hub of Newcastle and Gateshead. The decision to renew this essential part of the infrastructure underscores the commitment to seamless operations and passenger safety.
The renewal works are meticulously planned to minimize disruption to Metro's millions of customers. Scheduled over two weekends, coinciding with the Easter weekend, the closures between Heworth and South Gosforth will enable engineers to execute the replacement effectively. While inconvenience to passengers is inevitable, the planned closures aim to mitigate disruptions as much as possible.
Stuart Clarke, Metro Infrastructure Director, emphasized the strategic importance of the Prudhoe Street crossover. He emphasized that the replacement signifies a significant upgrade rather than mere refurbishment. The meticulous planning and execution underscore the commitment to maintaining the Metro's efficiency and safety standards.
The renewal process entails replacing the entire concrete track bed, a complex task that demands precision and expertise. Fresh concrete will be carefully pumped down 150 meters to the site before the new track junction is installed in sections within the tunnels. This meticulous approach ensures the seamless integration of the new infrastructure while adhering to stringent safety standards.
During the closure periods, Central, Monument, and Haymarket Metro stations will remain closed to customers. Alternative arrangements will be made for passengers traveling from North Tyneside via Wallsend, who are advised to alight at Manors or St James Metro stations.
The investment in Metro infrastructure reflects a broader commitment to modernization and improvement. With the government's funding, the total investment in Metro infrastructure since 2010 is expected to reach £446 million by March. This underscores a long-term commitment to enhancing public transportation infrastructure and ensuring the Metro remains a reliable and efficient mode of travel for the community.
