First Female Civil Engineer, Commemorated for Iconic Role in Landmark's Creation

Dorothy Buchanan, the first female member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, will be commemorated for her pivotal role in the creation of the Tyne Bridge as restoration work commences on the North East landmark.

A commemorative blue plaque is set to grace the Grade II-star listed bridge, honoring Buchanan's contribution to its design team, which saw the bridge open in 1928. Buchanan's induction into the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1927 marked a historic milestone, as she stood as the sole woman among 9,979 male members, becoming Britain's first qualified female civil engineer.

The unveiling of the plaque, scheduled for March 13 on the south-west tower of the Tyne Bridge, will be conducted by Gateshead Mayor, Coun Eileen McMaster. The Common Room, located in Neville Hall, Newcastle, nominated Buchanan for the plaque as part of its Inspiring Pioneers project, which recognizes women who played significant roles in regional change.

Buchanan, born in 1899 and passing away in 1985, studied civil engineering at the University of Edinburgh and joined Dorman Long & Co., where she contributed to the design team of the Tyne Bridge and other notable projects like the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Her impact extended globally, with contributions to bridges in Dessouk, Sudan, and Khartoum.

Kate Lloyd, regional director of the Institution of Civil Engineers, expressed delight in commemorating Buchanan's legacy on the Tyne Bridge, hoping her story would inspire women to pursue careers in civil engineering.

The Tyne Bridge ceremony marks the conclusion of The Common Room's plaque installations across Tyne and Wear local authorities, in collaboration with Newcastle University, aiming to highlight underrepresented engineering pioneers.

Lauren Dunbar, programme and engagement manager at The Common Room, noted Buchanan's trailblazing role in civil engineering and her advocacy for women's rights in the workforce, aiming to inspire future generations by connecting them with past pioneers.
