Hexham House, a towering landmark in Walker, Newcastle, is slated for a controlled explosion, set to occur in late May, marking the end of an era for the high-rise structure.
This explosive demolition will be a significant event, reminiscent of Newcastle's last major blast in 2008 when Sir Bobby Robson triggered the destruction of the old Scottish and Newcastle Brewery.
The decision to bring down Hexham House and its neighboring Titan House has been in the pipeline since 2018 when the last tenants vacated the premises amid complaints of the buildings being used as drug havens.
Newcastle City Council has long aimed to clear the 16-storey towers to make way for a new housing estate, but the process faced numerous setbacks. In 2022, the removal of asbestos became more challenging after thieves raided the sites, stealing copper piping.
While Titan House underwent gradual demolition last year, concerns arose about the process. As a result, demolition specialists now advocate for a controlled explosion as the safest method to dismantle Hexham House.
The council plans to engage with East End residents to discuss safety measures and launch a competition for local children to design a health and safety poster.
Coun Irim Ali, the council's cabinet member for housing, expressed relief at the progress, acknowledging past frustrations and delays. She emphasized the commitment to provide quality social housing and the excitement surrounding the area's regeneration.
Residents and businesses will receive notifications from the contractor outlining the demolition schedule and safety precautions before the operation commences.
